Day 53 - Canon City, CO

we left this morning from lake pueblo with a sunny morning and winds quickly increasing from the west. hmmm. had coffee and oatmeal and got rolling. we had planned to reach canon city before determining from there where we might end up. once we got on the hiway west-bound, we ran face first into 30-40 mph winds, with gusts we would later find out that reached 60-70 mph. it was so ridiculous that we had to dismount and WALK our bikes ! we were all laughing out loud at the intensity of the winds ! completely unrideable.

shortly, a woman named Helen in a pickup pulled over, seeing the futility of our circumstance, to offer us a ride to canon city. we happily accepted ! we went to her farm house to unwind, over a pre-pre-pre happy hour beer. helen filled us in on how she came to live here. very nice and kind lady, once again another example of the pay-it-forward mindset.

we then went to her friend Stephanie's place, and then we all went to lunch at the owl's, a small burger joint. great burgers ! then to the chamber of commerce for information to evaluate local camping options. came away from there with a lead to stay at the local monestary. there is a winery attached, so we stumbled into a wine tasting venture - how apro pos since it was happy hour time ! we said so long to our new friend who gave us help and her fun company for the afternoon !

we setup our wares at the building where we could get a hot shower and a quiet place to camp. very nice. went for a nice walk-about along the river walk toward town and another stop-in at the owl's for a burger nightcap !

low miles today, but justified !

today: 20 BRUTAL miles
to date: 2816
